Aaron and I have been together for 10 years and have had some pretty epic Halloween couple costumes over the years. They’ve been anything from silly to sexy, interesting to inspiring.
You can check them out below & let me know if you try any of them out!
SIREN & SAILOR COSTUME
A sailor’s love for the sea is only matched by a siren’s salty kiss! 2018 was a big year for me in my journey towards more sustainable living – I was having many ‘aha’ moments – and it was important to me to pull together a beautiful, meaningful zero waste couples costume.
Since there is more plastic than there are shells showing up on our beaches in Hawai’i, I aimed for accuracy by adorning my crown with collected micro plastics as well as seashells we had collected over the years.
I thrifted Aaron’s shirt and hat as well as the fabrics to make my costume then bought a corn cob pipe and mop head for Aaron’s sailor beard.
He already had his pants & shoes. We ended up winning best costume at the party we attended. I think Aaron’s mop beard stole the show!
Waste doesn’t have to be the base of every holiday if we’re intentional. Hope you had a spooky and fun shellebration! 🐚
HULA LAMPS COSTUME
For our first Halloween spent in Hawai’i, I wanted to dress up as something tropical. I looked and looked for ideas but nothing caught my eye.
I found one image of a couple as hula lamps and although their costumes were pretty tacky, it planted the idea in my brain and I ran with it! We got so many compliments this Halloween & to this day, it’s one of my very favorites we’ve ever done.
To assemble the costume, I thrifted two old lamp shades and two headbands – my mother and I wired them with battery powered lights so we could wear them on our heads and that they’d shine bright all night.
We bought the grass skirts and shell / flower leis locally. The best part? We got to wear our swimsuits on Halloween. This was a first for me!
MOTHER EARTH & FATHER TIME COSTUME
This is one of my favorite couple costumes we’ve ever done! Lavender in my hair, seeing Aaron with gray hair… it was magical. We both wore our own clothes but sourced the accessories to tie it together.
Our alarm clock made the perfect oversized time piece for Aaron and the initial inspiration was the globe ornament from our Christmas decorations that I carried all night.
SUN & MOON COUPLES COSTUME
You are my sun, my moon & all my stars. This is the phrase that inspired this halloween couples costume. I’ve said this to Aaron a thousand times and when thinking of couple costumes that were not commercialized or overdone, I came up with this idea!
I found my dress secondhand in a thrift store and made my headpiece with old cardboard scraps and gold leaf left over from my siren makeup (keep all your halloween stuff in a box to reuse!).
Aaron’s moon was a fun little project where I used cardboard scraps and left over paper from shipping packages to get the shape and texture! I want to wear this one again one year.
POPEYE & OLIVE OYL COUPLE COSTUME
This was our second Halloween together & the first time we dressed up as a couple. This is probably our least creative but most classic couple costume! We got so many compliments and I always look back fondly on this year!
BEARDED LADY & THE ALL-HEARING MAN COSTUME
This year we were invited to a ‘freak show’ themed party and asked to dress up as anyone who would have been in the freak show part of a circus. Such a fun party at a secret speak easy owned by a friend!
We purchased the fake ears & beard from a costume shop and everything else we already owned. I wore an old prom dress and Aaron wore a dressy all-black look.
